Poland on Monday said it had detained a man with “direct links to neo-Nazi groups” in Norway who tried to join Ukraine military’s legion of foreign volunteers.
The man, a Norwegian citizen, was detained in September as he was trying to cross into Ukraine and held in custody on suspicion of posing a threat to the internal security of Poland.
“He planned to join the International Legion of Territorial Defence of Ukraine,” Warsaw’s ABW secret services said in a statement.
“During his previous stay in Ukraine, he allegedly obtained equipment (patches, uniform elements, weapons) from the bodies of Russian soldiers,” the statement added.
Poland did not name the suspect, but the statement said he was now awaiting extradition to Norway.
The statement also added that during the arrest, the officers seized drugs as well as “materials indicating the promotion of extremism and progressive radicalisation”.
Warsaw also said the man was known to Norwegian police and suspected of offences including illegal possession of weapons and issuing threats to the state administration employees.
