Angola turned the tables in the race for a place at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating Central African Republic (CAR) 2-1 in a Group E match of the qualifying tournament at the Stade de la Reunification in Cameroon on Saturday.
The CAR needed just one win in the match to secure a place in next year’s competition. However, they found themselves behind as early as the 12th minute when Kialonda Gaspar scored to make it 1-0.
Central African midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia equalized just a minute into the second half.
Angola’s Felicio Milson scored the decisive winner in the 86th minute to give his team all three points.
The victory rekindled Angola’s hopes of qualifying for the AFCON finals, where they are currently second in Group E and will next face Madagascar on the road in September this year.
The 34th AFCON will be held in Cote d’Ivoire next year.
