The Kumawu parliamentary seat is currently being contested by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and two independent candidates. Today, on Tuesday, May 23, they are engaging in a fierce battle for this seat, which became vacant following the unfortunate passing of Philip Basoah, the NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, in March.
Both major political parties are eagerly vying for victory in order to strengthen their representation in parliament and assess their campaign strategies leading up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. Despite facing strong opposition from the NDC and the two independent candidates, the NPP, which originally held the seat, remains confident in its ability to retain it.
For instance, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has encouraged NPP supporters to demonstrate their unwavering support by turning out in large numbers and voting overwhelmingly for the party’s parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim. Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government’s desire to establish Kumawu as NPP’s stronghold and to secure the seat.
“In this by-election, we want the entire nation to recognize that Kumawu belongs to the NPP. With great enthusiasm, come forward and vote for our parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim, to triumph in this by-election. He possesses humility, diligence, and intelligence. He will ensure the development of Kumawu. I personally hold him in high regard, so let’s unite and vote for him resoundingly,” urged Dr. Bawumia.
Meanwhile, George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organiser of the NDC, remains optimistic about his party’s chances of winning the Kumawu by-election. He expressed confidence in the NDC’s dedicated efforts to secure victory in the constituency. Mr. Opare Addo also emphasized that an NDC win would not only shake up the political landscape of the country but also unsettle certain political figures.
“There will be a surprising outcome in Kumawu, resulting in a new MP from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) representing the constituency,” stated Mr. Opare Addo.
Interestingly, the two independent candidates share the same names and are dressed identically in kente clothing during the notice of poll. They even initially had the same symbol until the Electoral Commission (EC) intervened, following public criticism, to change one of the symbols. One of these independent candidates, who previously contested and garnered significant support but ultimately lost, is considered a dark horse in the race. He firmly believes that this is his time to succeed.
During the 2020 general elections, Kumawu had a total of 34,800 registered voters.
In the meantime, the EC, responsible for organizing the by-election, assures the public that all necessary materials are prepared for the event. Additionally, the police have increased their presence to ensure the smooth conduct of the by-election and prevent any untoward incidents from occurring.
