France is in favor of establishing a fair peace and avoiding escalation, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a press conference in the wake of his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.
“Times are troubling now, as tragic history is repeating itself,” the French leader said. “I believe it is our duty not to miss any opportunity, take responsibility in the face of ongoing conflicts, be able to build a fair peace and avoid any escalation.”
“I know that you share these beliefs,” Macron said, addressing Xi Jinping.
The French President noted the “need to continue discussions and prevent an escalation in the world.”
“We must be clear that building a fair peace and stability is in the interest of the people,” he said.
Macron also underscored that “Europe needs a stable security structure for the future.”
Meanwhile, the French leader specified that building the “architecture of European security” is impossible without respect for the territorial integrity of European states.
Earlier, Macron opined before the beginning of the negotiations that China has an important role to play in the establishment of peace.
The French leader arrived in China on a state visit on Wednesday. It is his first trip to China in three and a half years – the last time he visited Beijing was in 2019. On Wednesday, Macron said that China may play an important role in the situation around Ukraine due to its good relations with Russia. The official visit’s program will end on April 7.
