Russian bombers intercepted near Alaska
Russian bombers and fighter jets were intercepted in international airspace near Alaska, according to the US military. The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) deployed two F-16 fighters to the area on Monday.
The Russian aircraft did not enter the US or Canadian airspace and did not pose a threat, NORAD said in a statement. Russia said it had carried out flights over international waters, including in the Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia, in recent days.
It has flown military planes over the Bering Sea before, but the West has become more concerned since its invasion of Ukraine. North American security forces have also been on high alert after a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon was shot down in US airspace.
