Off the back of the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, the big behemoths of awards season are looming: and the BAFTA nominations are officially in. The UK’s biggest film celebration has unveiled its full list of nominees, celebrating the best movies from Britain and beyond – and leading the pack with 14 nominations is All Quiet On The Western Front, Edward Berger’s fresh adaptation of the 1929 war novel. As well as receiving nominations for Best Film and Director, it received recognition in Supporting Actor for Albrecht Schuch, Film Not In The English Language, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Sound, Original Score and several more.
Not far behind it are Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Banshees Of Inisherin – which received 10 nominations each. They’re both up for Best Film, as well as Original Screenplay and Director (for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and Martin McDonagh, respectively). On team Everything Bagel, Michelle Yeoh bagged a nomination for Leading Actress, with Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis earning nods for Support Actor and Actress (no Stephanie Hsu, though – somehow being majorly overlooked this awards season). On team Jenny The Donkey, there were plenty of acting nominations too – with Colin Farrell up for Leading Actor, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan both up for Supporting Actor, and Kerry Condon up for Supporting Actress.
Also faring well in the running is Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis – which is among the five flicks nominated for Best Film. It earned nine nods overall, not for Luhrmann himself, but for Austin Butler in Leading Actor, Cinematography, Sound, Editing and more. Rounding out the Best Film nominees is TÁR – which also saw Todd Field in the running for Director and Original Screenplay, Cate Blanchett for Leading Actress, and a Sound nomination.
Elsewhere, there’s plenty to shout about. Good Luck To You, Leo Grande pulled in four noms – for Daryl McCormack (also in the public-voted EE Rising Star category) and Emma Thompson in the acting lists, plus Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut for writer Katy Brand. Park Chan-wook’s Korean thriller Decision To Leave has him up for Director, while the movie is in the running for Film Not In The English Language. Brendan Fraser received an Best Actor nomination for The Whale (with Hong Chau for Supporting Actress, plus an Adapted Screenplay nod – though notably it’s not up for Best Film or Director), Angela Bassett’s heartbreaking turn as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has her up for Supporting Actress, and the Animated category is a short list of bangers: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, and Turning Red.
Cinematographer Greig Fraser is up for his stellar work on The Batman, while Top Gun: Maverick’s maverick editor Eddie Hamilton has been recognised in his field. There’s some love for The Woman King, with Gina Prince-Bythewood up for Director and Viola Davis for Best Actress, Paul Mescal earned recognition for Aftersun (which also saw nominations for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut for Charlotte Wells), and a Visual Effects nomination for Avatar: The Way Of Water – we’re interpreting that one as an award specifically for Payakan.
The biggest shocker here, no Stephanie Hsu aside? There’s not a jot for Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, sure to get, well, everyone talking. And while Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans got an Original Screenplay nod, it didn’t make it into Best Film, Director, or any of the acting categories. Plus, there’s nothing for international sensation RRR – even in the Film Not In The English Language Category.
Will All Quiet On The Western Front sweep the board on the night? Are we living in a universe where Everything Everywhere All At Once bags all the awards? And if Banshees Of Inisherin doesn’t win, will there be dismembered fingers lobbed at the doors of BAFTA HQ? We’ll find out in a month’s time, with the BAFTA ceremony due to take place at Royal Festival Hall in London on 19 February. The countdown is on.
