Mustapha Hamidu, a self-proclaimed phone trader, emerged before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly selling packed cracked tiles as phones.
He faces two counts of trying to commit a criminal act and duping by false pretense.
Yesterday, Hamidu, also recognized as Abulley, appeared before the court ruled over by Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah (January 16).
His petition was not accepted by the court, and he is scheduled to reappear on January 18 of this year for his petition to be heard.
FACTS
According to the prosecuting attorney, Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor, the facts of the matter were that Abulley, who reside in Odorkor, had consistently scammed potential victims by introducing them to original phones he showcases for sale.
After bargaining for specific prices, the accused ended up changing the real phones to phone cases packaged with broken tile pieces.
According to the prosecutor, victims who purchased the phones arrived home and discovered, while attempting to use the newly purchased phones, they had been forced to exchange their money for decorated phone covers piled with pieces of broken tiles.
“Police met accused on December 22, 2022, near the old terminal, with an original Tecno Camon 19 cellular phone in a phone cover, and two comparable phone covers, all packaged with broken tiles in his normal business, trying to lure some innocent people to express an interest in his business,” he said.
According to Chief Inspector Ahiabor, the suspect would eventually force buyers to part with cash ranging from GHc500.00 to GHc1,000.00 in exchange for his packaged broken tiles by having to introduce them to his business.
He also stated that a pursuit of him revealed the fraudulent packages, prompting his immediate arrest to assist police investigations.
“As a result, the suspect was scheduled to appear before this Honourable Court while attempts are being made to apprehend his partners, who is currently at large,” Chief Inspector Ahiabor said.
