WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms Inc, announced on Thursday that users will be able to use proxy servers to access the service in countries where the app is blocked.
A proxy server acts as a web filter between users and web services, allowing netizens to avoid restrictions and censorship.
WhatsApp announced that proxy support in the app is now officially available for users running the most recent version.
Users in Iran and Syria have used virtual private network (VPN) services to circumvent internet censorship.
“If these shutdowns continue,” the messaging service said, “we hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communication.”
WhatsApp stated in September that it would “do anything” within its technical capabilities to keep the service accessible and that it would not block Iranian phone numbers.
After unrest erupted in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was arrested by morality police in Tehran for “unsuitable attire,” Iran restricted access to Meta’s Instagram and WhatsApp.
